. . . and at the end of the day . . .
Uncle Clarence is not doing well. Those in the closest of the circle know this, and also know that this could be the bell lap for a 90 year old man that spent much of his adult life giving discretion and moderation the raspberries.
With that as a backdrop, yesterday I received a call from Mary Kathryn. Like so many, she is resigned to the fact that there is little she can do for Clarence from a time zone away. Mary Kathryn is an amazing person with a passion for helping people manage life-changing loss. I am not talking about cursory casseroles or vague offers of help. More like the 'roll up your sleeves' and 'get your hands dirty' kind of stuff that makes a difference to people in places of genuine need. Mary Kathryn leans in.
'Lean in' is part of popular lexicon. It was coined in the title of a 2013 book by Sheryl Sandberg. She has a new book titled Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience and Finding Joy. In a NPR interview with Ari Shapiro broadcast April 25 she said, ". . . rather than offer to do something, it's often better to do anything. Just do something specific". Something Mary Kathryn has lived for a long time. The link below (just show up) will take you to the interview. You can read or listen. It is well worth the eight minute investment.
I think Uncle Clarence was in the navy. No, it was Eugene that was in the navy. I don't really recall when or how Clarence served. I remember a picture, that would help, but I am not sure where the picture is. Tomorrow when I am waiting for glue to set up I will get in the car and go find out. I bet he has a picture...
